Substantive Editing for Academic Writers

I provide thoughtful, substantive editing for academics and other scholarly writers who want their writing to be clear, compelling, and polished without losing their individual voice.

With more than 15 years of experience as an academic editor, writing instructor, and writing coach, I bring both an editor's eye and an educator's perspective to my work. I hold an Ed.D. from Harvard University and have taught academic writing and psychology at Harvard, where I also served as an editor for the Harvard Educational Review. I work primarily with faculty and other academic writers, supporting projects at every stage of the writing process, from shaping an initial idea to polishing a manuscript for publication.

My editing services include journal articles, book chapters and manuscripts, grant proposals, dissertations and theses, and other academic and professional writing.

Editing Rates

Editing projects have a minimum fee of $500.

Sentence-level editing and polish is typically priced at $0.15 per word. This includes close, line-by-line attention to clarity, concision, flow, readability, and preservation of your individual voice.

Developmental editing and academic formatting are quoted by project based on the manuscript and the scope of work. I will provide a clear project fee before we begin.

Writers looking for ongoing support as a project develops may also be better served by writing coaching, which allows us to work through questions of argument, organization, structure, and the writing process over time.

Depending on your manuscript and where you are in the writing process, editing may include:

Big-picture editorial feedback

Feedback on organization, argument, structure, clarity, and the development of your ideas. I can help identify gaps, redundancies, places where readers may lose the thread of your argument, and areas that would benefit from further development or reorganization.

Sentence-level editing and polish

Careful editing to improve clarity, concision, flow, grammar, and readability while preserving your voice and meaning. I pay particular attention to the patterns that can make academic writing unnecessarily dense or difficult to follow. My goal is to make your writing accessible and impactful.

Academic style and formatting

Review of citations, references, headings, tables, and other elements of academic style, including APA style and institutional formatting requirements when applicable.

Not every manuscript needs the same level of editorial attention. Before taking on a project, I consider the manuscript, your goals, and the scope of the work to determine the approach that will be most useful to you.
